As you know, all public and private Virginia schools have been ordered closed by the Governor for the remainder of this academic year. Since all our program service activities are school based, this has essentially temporarily shut down our ability to serve.

VisioCheck Comprehensive Vision Programming
Fortunately, our VisioCheck programming is almost complete for the school year, resulting in the administration of our high-tech, comprehensive screening to more than 59,000 students! This is a record-setting number for us. In fact, it exceeds last year’s record-setting numbers by more than 10 percent! Our team has worked very hard and efficiently all school year to deliver our program and we are extremely proud of what we have accomplished.
Conexus Mobile Vision Clinics
Our Mobile Vision Clinic was able to provide 3,149 exams, prescribe 2,295 pairs of glasses, and refer 512 children for additional care this school year. To put that in perspective, last year we provided 551 exams. We are honored to have touched so many lives and brought healthy vision to students throughout the region.
However, as you know, schools shut down on March 13th thus preventing the delivery of a handful of clinics as well as scheduled dispensing dates for the glasses which were in the production pipeline from the Lab. To date, we’ve received the bulk of the glasses that were in production at that time of the shut-down. On Monday (3/23) we were notified by the Lab they have closed for the short-term. We have about 300 pair of prescription glasses on hand ready for dispensing (about 100 for each of the three divisions we serve) and approximately 20 pair on hold in production.
The Conexus team has made the decision to wait until the “all clear” is given to resume “normal” activities – doctors offices seeing routine patients, people returning to work, etc. – and schedule days to dispense the remaining glasses from our Mobile Vision Clinic at the remaining schools. Conexus will work to schedule these days through the superintendents and individual schools. Because the glasses we dispense typically need some form of adjustment, dispensing should be handled by Conexus opticians as to ensure proper fit and to help the child adjust to their new prescriptions. Conexus will follow the recommendations of the eye care associations, which have been very consistent and have been in line with the broader recommendations, and the CDC.
Our ‘See the Difference’ campaign dinner has been rescheduled to September 23, 2021 at the same location (Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center). We are marching on, full steam ahead, after this temporary pause.
Our Conexus Golf Classic has been moved to October 26th and will be held at Hermitage Country Club.
Starting on May 18th, Conexus’ office hours will be Monday through Thursday, 9am to 3pm. Please note that the senior team is always available by email and phone, even when working remotely. Our office voice mail system sends us messages remotely as well. When we do have to visit the office, we have instituted special cleaning processes making certain high traffic, common areas are cleaned and sprayed regularly.
All program staff are home at the moment and they will be called in only upon occasion and only in small numbers. Our goal is to follow guidance provided by CDC and Governor’s office to keep our team safe! Part of that is to have reduced numbers of staff in the office at any given time.
We have worked hard with our partners, donors, school divisions, and the community to create an efficient, effective organization that really makes a difference in our community. We are so grateful for your support and commitment to our cause. We will, without a doubt, get through this Covid-19 crisis and be stronger and more effective on the other side! With the leadership of Chairman Joe Bowman and our Board and the creative management of current challenges, we are still working toward expansion of our efforts to help more children in our community have all the benefit of good vision as they learn, play and live!
Stay safe and healthy and we will see all of you soon!
